Who would have known that the Welsh have such a strong influence in that most quintessentially of English havens, Stratford-upon-Avon? The River Avon wends its way for 96 miles through Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and, of course, Avon - but the name Avon is a simple anglicisation of the Welsh word for river, afon

It is, of course, Stratford-upon-Avon which is the most famous of all the towns sitting along the river and there can be no doubt that the river has played its part in inspiring the greatest playwright and poet of all time- William Shakespeare. Nowadays, the influence of the river continues, with leisure craft plying their trade on its waters throughout the seasons, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in the centre of the town on its north bank and a myriad other attractions a stone's throw from its shores.
